CS Other Presentations
Department of Computer Science - University of Cyprus
Besides Colloquiums, the Department of Computer Science at the University of Cyprus also holds Other Presentations (Research Seminars, PhD Defenses, Short Term Courses, Demonstrations, etc.). These presentations are given by scientists who aim to present preliminary results of their research work and/or other technical material. Other Presentations serve as a forum for educating Computer Science students and related announcements are disseminated to the Department of Computer Science (i.e., the csall list):

Abstract:
Laban Movement Analysis is a descriptive language for visualizing and understanding all forms of human movement. In this talk, a probabilistic framework is proposed for its computational implementation. Several topics from signal processing, machine learning and Bayesian theory will be
discussed towards the application of the so called Computational Laban Movement Analysis in the Action and Person Recognition areas. We demonstrate that Laban elements are action invariant and can be composed from a bottom-up perspective to interpret motion information of higher complexities. Action comprehensive annotation from motion analysis and intelligent video surveillance case studies are presented to validate our models using both 3-D and 2-D data. This talk focuses on the core of Ph.D. studies of Luis Santos at the Institute of Systems and Robotics from the University of Coimbra and is integrated in the knowledge transfer paradigm of the Social Robot, a project funded by the European Commission within the Seventh Framework Programme FP7, by People Programme, Industry-Academia Partnerships and Pathways (IAPP), under grant agreement 285870.
Short Bio:
Luís Santos was born on August 3, 1980, in Coimbra, Portugal is currently a PhD student at the University of Coimbra, Portugal. Graduated with the degree of Electrical and Computer Engineering in September 2006, he continued his studies taking a Pre-Bologna M.Sc. degree in automatic positioning and computer vision systems at the same institution in February 2009. Working as a researcher in the area of human-robot interaction using Laban Movement Analysis, within the BACS European Project from November 2007 to February 2010, he is currently integrated in the Mobile Robotics Laboratory (MRL) research group within the Institute of Systems and Robotics from the University of Coimbra, as a Ph.D student. His current research topics focus on probabilistic approaches based on Bayesian theory to model general human motion with practical applications.
