Department of Computer Science - University of Cyprus
Besides Colloquiums, the Department of Computer Science at the University of Cyprus also holds Other Presentations (Research Seminars, PhD Defenses, Short Term Courses, Demonstrations, etc.). These presentations are given by scientists who aim to present preliminary results of their research work and/or other technical material. Other Presentations serve as a forum for educating Computer Science students and related announcements are disseminated to the Department of Computer Science (i.e., the csall list):

PhD Defense: Social and Context-aware Multimedia Content Distribution in Mobile Networks, Mr. Waqar Ali Aziz (University of Cyprus, Cyprus), Thursday, April 10, 2025, 09.00-10.00 EET.
The Department of Computer Science at the University of Cyprus cordially invites you to the PhD Defense entitled:
Social and Context-aware Multimedia Content Distribution in Mobile Networks
Speaker: Mr. Waqar Ali Aziz |
Abstract:
As social media and multimedia applications continue to grow exponentially, Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) face increasing pressure to deliver high-quality, uninterrupted content while managing ever-larger volumes of traffic. This talk presents a comprehensive set of intelligent and scalable solutions to tackle the critical challenges facing modern CDNs—ranging from caching inefficiencies to mobile traffic prediction and data center congestion.
The first part of the talk introduces a proactive, collaborative caching framework that predicts content popularity using machine learning and contextual data, enabling content to be stored closer to users. This not only reduces latency and improves cache hit rates but also enhances scalability and resource utilization across the network.
Next, the focus shifts to cellular network traffic prediction, a key enabler for improving CDN responsiveness during high-demand periods. A novel machine learning-based approach is presented that identifies traffic congestion hotspots and applies transfer learning across base stations, drastically cutting training time and computational costs.
Further, a content-aware traffic management framework is proposed, classifying network traffic based on quality of service (QoS) requirements and forecasting future demands. This enables proactive network configuration and resource allocation, ensuring efficient performance across diverse applications.
Finally, the talk addresses data center network optimization through a hybrid architecture that integrates wireless links to relieve inter-rack congestion. Innovative use of metasurfaces for 3D beamforming is explored, offering a flexible and high-frequency solution to handle the dynamic nature of modern datacenter traffic.
Each proposed solution is rigorously evaluated using real-world datasets and benchmarked against state-of-the-art methods, showcasing measurable improvements in CDN performance, latency reduction, and resource efficiency.
Short Bio:
Waqar A. Aziz is a PhD candidate in Computer Science at the University of Cyprus (UCY), supervised by Prof. Vasos Vassiliou, and a CYENS Doctoral Training Program fellow. He holds a B.Eng. in Electrical Engineering from UET Peshawar (2016) and an M.S. from NUST Pakistan (2020). His research focuses on data-driven content delivery systems; distributed learning for ML-assisted edge caching, efficient transfer learning for mobile networks, and optimization of data center networks. During his Ph.D., he has contributed to EU projects, collaborated with the University of Coimbra and Nokia Networks Paris, and published scientific articles in IEEE flagship conferences and journals.
