MOTIVE: Mobile Terminal Information Value added functionality

Duration: 24 months (2006-2008)

Start: 1/1/2006

Project Website: http://www.netrl.cs.ucy.ac.cy/index.php?option=com_content&task=section&id=3&Itemid=11

Principal Investigator: Ανδρέας Πιτσιλλίδης

Main Funding Source: European Commission (IST-FP6, contract number: 027659).

Total Cost: 266,540

Partners: Institute of Communications and Computer Systems, Vodafone - Panafon S.A., VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, Société Française du Radiotéléphone, Siemens AG, Apex Concepts & Solutions AG, University of Cyprus, AS Regio.

Mobile terminals are evolving into a ubiquitous computing platform. Yet their information gathering and processing capabilities are underutilised, although they are excellent candidates for mobile data monitoring. MOTIVE enabled terminals are expected to transparently store, pre-process and upload to the network (for further processing) historical information about the monitored data. MOTIVE project will demonstrate the value of this innovative concept by enhancing existing processes and enabling the provision of new context aware services. MOTIVE will define a multi-layered system architecture and functionality addressing issues such as terminal local processing, user control (when and how information is revealed), data transfer load, network side processing/storage and real time vs. off-line information collection modes. It will investigate three key areas: (a) Integrated End-to-End User Experience Monitoring: revealing terminal, network, service and application performance as experienced by the end user, so as to aid fault management, network configuration or even application design corrective actions. (b) Ubiquitous Terminal Assisted Positioning: Exploiting historical information collected while in idle mode (e.g. received signal strength from various radio access technologies) so as to increase the accuracy of positioning techniques, both outdoors and indoors. (c) Anonymous Mobile Community Services: Querying for impersonalized information that resides in a community of terminals while respecting user anonymity and privacy. For instance, the retrieval of road traffic condition as determined by the terminal velocity in that area.

Welcome

Welcome to the website of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Cyprus. The Department has experienced significant growth over the last few years with strong groups in artificial intelligence, computer architecture, computer networks, data management, graphics and virtual reality, internet computing, software engineering and theoretical computer science. The Department offers a Bachelor degree in Computer Science with 7 different specializations as well as a number of Master degrees and a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science.

The Department has a strong research infrastructure comprising high-performance clusters and storage area networks, cloud computing facilities, smart-phones and sensing devices and virtual reality equipment. Since 2005, our Department has been involved in more than 160 research projects funded from both the European Union and the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation with total funding of over 21.5 million euros.
